The Equalities Act 2010 sets out a clear duty to make ‘reasonable adjustments’ to enable people to participate, and explains that it is not sufficient to wait until a person turns up before making these changes – adjustments need to be ‘anticipatory’. In these pages, the concept is applied to service users and carers participating in nurse education, whether they have any of the Equalities Act ‘protected characteristics’ or not.
Such adjustments may include:
- support with getting to and from the venue
- Addressing mobility issues by avoiding stairs, heavy doors and passkeys
- Sensory access, such as hearing loops and large font
- Intellectual access, such as jargon-free, clear language.
- Dietary access, accommodating for cultural or digestive needs.
- Language access, by providing signing or interpreters
